131 Years of Chiropractic: How Wellness Care Has Evolved (and Why It Still Matters)

man in gray tshirt low back adjustment on tableThis September marks 131 years since the first reported chiropractic adjustment in 1895. A lot has changed since then. Today, chiropractors may use a variety of techniques and adapt care according to factors such as a person’s presentation, preferences and stage of life.

At the same time, the way Australians think about their health has changed too. Wellness is increasingly becoming part of the everyday routine rather than something people think about only when a problem arises.

Wellness Habits Are Changing

PwC’s 2026 Voice of the Consumer survey paints an interesting picture. More than one in three Australians (35%) surveyed rated their health as poor or life-restricting. Nearly two in three (64%) identified stress, fatigue or low energy as a barrier to reaching their health and wellness goals.

Technology is playing a big part too. According to the survey, 82% of Australians use healthcare apps or wearables to track at least one health and wellness activity. Exercise, medication reminders and sleep are among the things they’re monitoring.

From checking a sleep score in the morning to tracking a workout, health has become part of the daily conversation.

Where Chiropractic Fits Today

For some people, chiropractic care is one part of that broader interest in looking after their physical health. Someone may initially visit because of back or neck discomfort, while others may choose periodic appointments as part of their personal approach to maintaining movement and function.

“For me, one of the interesting changes over the years is how much more aware people have become of their everyday health habits. They’re paying attention to things like movement, sleep and how their bodies feel, and asking more questions about what they can do to look after themselves.” — Cleveland chiropractor Dr Jeff Yadlosky

Care isn’t one-size-fits-all. A chiropractor can discuss your concerns, assess your individual presentation and explain whether chiropractic care may be appropriate.
